Who We Are
Fab Lab Jackson County delivers education, community, workforce and business programming that teaches innovation, design-thinking, problem-solving and change-making. In addition, the lab provides open and equitable community access to advanced manufacturing and digital fabrication tools, equipment, technology and resources. Fab Lab Jackson County is one of over 1,800 MIT-chartered Fab Labs in more than 78 countries, it is one of a very few independent non-profit labs in the United States, and the first in Mississippi. Furthermore, we are one of the top labs globally in terms of leadership, organization, support, size and capabilities, illustrating the impact a fab lab can make on a community.
A Fab Lab consists of a suite of digital fabrication and rapid prototyping machines, including a large computer numerical control (CNC) router (the ShopBot), a vinyl cutter, a laser engraver, an electronics work bench, a 3D printer, and the accompanying computers and software for design, programming and machine communications. This equipment allows students to use computer-aided design to make almost anything they can imagine. Fab Labs across the world share the same foundation of machines and processes and are linked through video conferencing and online tools. The Fab Lab was started in 2017 as part of a partnership with Chevron USA and The Fab Foundation.
